The Genetics Policy Institute has sponsored the development of the first textbook aimed at secondary education in the field of stem cell biology. This text, titled Introduction to Stem Cell Sciences, was authored by Catherine Ennis, Emer Clarke, Christopher Lannon and Eric Atkinson of ReachBio LLC in Seattle, WA, USA. The authors divided the textbook into three units: the field of stem cell research, stem cells and their role in medicine, and stem cells in research, allowing students to not only study opportunities in basic and applied research, but also ethical and regulatory issues. A key feature is the discussion topics for students at the end of each chapter, which give teachers an opportunity to further clarify scientific concepts and debate areas of controversy. This new textbook will serve as a valuable resource for basic knowledge in stem cell science, clarify misconception and assist educators in developing interest in our next generation of scientists.
